NISBET INN – HAUBSTADT, INDIANA

If you've never made the drive out to the Nisbet Inn, you're visiting a whole lot more than just another place to grab a bite to eat!

The Nisbet Inn has been around since 1912, when George Maurer built the roadside tavern shortly after the Evansville, Mt. Carmel & Northern Railway came through the area. In its early days, it served travelers coming through by rail and over the years has been a bar, grocery store, inn and even a hardware store. It once had a stable where horse and buggies could be rented to peddlers arriving by train.

One pretty amazing piece of its history is that the Nisbet Inn holds the second-oldest liquor license in the state of Indiana.

And in 2026, another chapter in that long history began.

Brent and Kathy Weatherwax, owners of Pappa Bear's Catering, became the new owners of the Nisbet Inn. Brent has quite a BBQ background himself. He got his start at the legendary 17th Street BBQ in Marion, Illinois, where he learned under world-champion pitmaster Mike Mills. Brent and Kathy have said they're honored to carry the torch for this Southern Indiana landmark while continuing the Nisbet Inn favorites people have enjoyed for years.

Of course, you can't talk about the Nisbet Inn without mentioning those famous words:

🍺 “WORLD'S COLDEST BEER!”

That slogan isn't something that just showed up recently. The Salat family, former owners of the Inn, started using the tagline on their sign years ago, and it stuck!

So what makes the beer so cold?

Part of the secret has traditionally been those frozen fishbowls the beer is served in. A previous owner also explained that the walk-in cooler is located close to where the beer is served, meaning it doesn't have to travel through a bunch of beer line before reaching that ice-cold glass.

Then there's the FOOD!
